How do I create an extra WordPress user?

3 min read

Creating an additional user in WordPress is useful when you want to give multiple people access to your website, for example for editing, management or other roles. Follow these simple steps to create a new user:

Step 1: Log on to your WordPress dashboard

  • Go to the login page of your WordPress website (for example yourwebsite.nl/wp-admin).
  • Enter your username and password and click Login.
Step 2: Go to the Users section

  • In the left menu of your dashboard, search and click Users.
  • Then click on Add New.
Step 3: Fill in the new user's data

  • Username: Choose a username for the new user. This is the name they use to login.
  • Email: Enter the user's email address. This is used for notifications and password recovery.
  • First name (optional): Add the user's first name.
  • Family Name (optional): Add the user's last name.
  • Website (optional): Enter the user's website, if available.
Step 4: Choose a User Role

  • With Role choose the role you want to assign to the new user. There are different roles that have different access levels:
    • Administrator: Has full access to everything on the website.
    • Editor: Can edit and publish messages and pages.
    • Author: Can write, edit and publish your own messages.
    • Writer: Can write and edit messages, but cannot publish.
    • Reader: Can only read messages without any editing permissions.

Choose the role best suited to the responsibilities of the new user.

Step 5: Please assign a password

  • A strong password for the new user is automatically created, but you can modify it by clicking on the Generate password-click button.
  • Make sure to share the password with the new user, unless you let the user reset the password himself.
Step 6: Send a notification (optional)

  • Check the box Send the user an email about their account on, so that the new user receives an email with their login details.
Step 7: Add the user

  • Click on the button Add new user to create the user.
Step 8: Login the user

  • The new user will receive an e-mail with their login details (if you have enabled this option). They can now login to your website with the chosen username and password.

With these steps you can easily add a new user to your WordPress site. Make sure you assign the right role so that the user only has access to the parts of the website that are relevant to their task.
