Using HTTPS automatically

2 min read

How do I automatically redirect to HTTPS?

SSL certificates are not automatically used by default. You should then replace 'http://' in the address bar with 'https://'. In this article we explain how to make sure that your website automatically uses 'https://'.

Important

In this article we use a .htaccess file to automatically use HTTPS. If you already have a .htaccess file in your web space, place the content we discuss in this article above all other rules.

Step-by-step guide

Step 1. Log in to cPanel.

Step 2. Under the category 'Files', click 'File Management'.

Step 3. Navigate to the folder of the domain name concerned. Click 'Settings' at the top right and check 'Show hidden files (dotfiles). Click 'Save'.

Step 4. If there is already a .htaccess file, then click on it with the right mouse button and click on 'Edit'. If there is no .htaccess file yet, then click on '+ File' at the top left. Enter as new filename '.htaccess'.

Step 5. Paste the following code into the .htaccess file:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]

Step 6. Click on 'Save changes' at the top right. Anyone who is not entering 'https://' will be redirected automatically.
