Start with a recoverable backup
Make a backup of your files and database. Check how to restore them. For a company website or webshop, you prefer to test a larger change first in a separate environment.
Check the requirements
See which WordPress and PHP versions support your theme and plugins. A plugin may require a newer WordPress version; another update may be needed just before you update WordPress. Follow the instructions of the affected developers.
Work checked at
Perform updates in clear steps. Then check your homepage, forms, login and any payment flow. Empty relevant caches when old content remains visible.
Make maintenance predictable
Schedule a fixed time to check available updates and backups. Ask for support if you have any doubts about compatibility or if you get an error message after an update.
