How do I set up DKIM?

2 min read

DKIM (DomainKeys Identifyed Mail) is an email security standard that helps to verify whether an email actually comes from the sender and whether the message has not been changed during transport. Setting up DKIM correctly helps to protect your email domain from spoofing and phishing attacks. Follow the steps below to set up DKIM:

Step 1: Log in to your cPanel

  • Go to the login page of your cPanel (for example: yourwebsite.nl/cpanel).
  • Enter your username and password and click Login.

Step 2: Go to the email section

  • Scroll down to the area Email in your cPanel dashboard.
  • Click Email Authentication (E-mail verification).

Step 3: Activate DKIM

  • You can see two important options: SPF and DKIM.
  • Click Set or Enable to the option DKIM.
  • cPanel automatically generates the required DKIM records for your domain.

Step 4: Add the DKIM records to your DNS

  • After DKIM is enabled, you need to add the generated DKIM records to your DNS settings.
  • Go to the DNS Zone Editor in cPanel.
    • Click Zone Editor under the part Domains.
  • Find your domain and click Manage.
  • Click Add Record.
  • Choose TXT as record type and add the DKIM value you got from cPanel.
  • Add the name of the record (for example: default._domainkey.jouwdomain.nl) and the value (the long DKIM key).
  • Click Save.

Step 5: Test the DKIM settings

  • After the changes have been made, you can test the DKIM settings via an online DKIM checker (for example: dkimvalidator.com).
  • This helps to verify that the setting has been implemented correctly.

Step 6: Waiting for DNS Propagation

  • Please note that it may take several hours to 24 hours to complete the DNS changes.

By switching on DKIM, you increase the credibility of your e-mails and improve the chances that they will enter the recipient's inbox correctly.
