How do I change the PHP version in cPanel?

2 min read

It is possible to modify the PHP version of your website in cPanel to make it compatible with your applications or plugins. Follow the steps below to change the PHP version of your website:

Step 1: Log in to your cPanel

  • Go to the cPanel login page of your hosting provider (for example: yourwebsite.nl/cpanel).
  • Enter your username and password and click Login.
Step 2: Find the 'Select PHP version' option

  • In the cPanel dashboard, scroll down to the section Software.
  • Click Select PHP version (or PHP Selector, depending on your hosting provider).
Step 3: Choose the desired PHP version

  • You will see a dropdown menu with the available PHP versions. Choose the version you want to use for your website. Most hosting providers offer versions such as PHP 7.x, PHP 8.x, and sometimes older versions.
  • Select the version that is compatible with your website or applications.
Step 4: Adjust the PHP settings (optional)

  • After choosing the PHP version, you can also use the PHP Extensions customize your website. Check the extensions you need (such as mbstring, gd, curl, etc.).
  • Some institutions, such as memory_limit or upload_max_filesize, can also be adapted via the PHP Settings link if available in your cPanel.
Step 5: Save your changes

  • Click Set as current version or Save (depending on your cPanel version) to set the new PHP version.
Step 6: Check your website

  • After changing the PHP version, go to your website to make sure everything works correctly.
  • If you are experiencing problems, you can restore the PHP version to a previous version or adjust the settings via the cPanel.

Important comments:

  • Compatibility: Make sure that the PHP version you choose is compatible with your website and the plugins or themes used. Newer versions of PHP can often offer better performance and security, but some older applications may have problems with the latest versions.
  • Errorlog: If you have any problems after changing the PHP version, check out the errorlog from your website to see which errors occur. This may help to resolve compatibility problems.

With these steps you can easily customize the PHP version for your website in cPanel and optimize the performance and compatibility of your website.
